This was definitely age and wear and tear. Our water is extremely soft, so has no minerals to cause limescale and the tap is around 20 years old. When the stiffness first appeared, it could be cured by a tiny squirt of WD40, but for well over a year it's just got worse and worse. A replacement was long overdue.
