Weekly walk
Apr. 13th, 2026 11:44 amDue to rain and being busy, we didn't manage to fit in our weekly walk together until yesterday (Sunday). We did a slightly different route through Abergwynant woods. The morning started dull and cold. I even wore gloves when we set out, but once up in the woods, out of the strong wind, it was warmer and by the time we were walking back to the car park at Penmaenpool, it was bright and sunny.
Walking up beside the River Gwynant, we came upon an old lime kiln. The limestone would have been loaded in at the top.

The quicklime would be removed from the narrow hole in the bottom. There are a few of these kilns alongside the river. Limestone would be brought in ships round the coast, then unloaded and brought upriver in smaller boats.

Looking back down the path we had just walked up. There's a clearing in the distance that is being recolonised by small conifers. Things regrow so quickly.

Total distance is about 4½ miles but with the steep up and down, is quite a good workout.
